Little Red

As many of you know I was fortunate enough to work with Rick Nunn for a couple of days in 2011. After shooting “White in the Woods” we got onto something creative and attempted “Little Red.” Rick burgled his parent’s house for the basket, rented the cape from a local fancy dress shop, and I put together the rest with a little help from my theatrical wardrobe.
Rick shot the first three digitally – and the rest on expired film which is what caused the unusual colour tones and grain on the later images.
The first image above is my favorite – which is yours?
So those were the digital… but Rick also shot this on FILM with his Canon 1V-hs with the Canon EF 135mm F/2.0 L on expired Fuji X-tra ISO400 (which is where these amazing tones come from).
Snow White’s Apple
Posted by Samantha Laura Kaye in 2011 Events, Alternative, Inspiration on October 14, 2011

“Snow White” and I have a few things in common – we both have red lips, pale skin, black hair – (ok mine is arguably brown but naturally black) both frolic in the forest, sing to animals and have terrible luck with apple’s.
This year I’ve managed to have a macbook pro stolen from under my table while I ate dinner at a restaurant, an iPhone4 smash and grabbed from my car (insert additional window replacement cost) and two Saturday’s ago my second iPhone4 – this one a 32gig model – was stolen from my handbag in a London club…
The frequency of stranger’s referring to me as Snow White coupled with this recent “apple curse” (through cruel twists of fate, circumstance and my own stupidity insurance has not assisted me with replacing any of these products) as my nearest and dearest are calling it has led me to do… [ Read more ]
The International London Tattoo Convention 2011
Posted by Samantha Laura Kaye in 2011 Events, Alternative on September 27, 2011

On Saturday I was fortunate enough to attend the 7th London International Tattoo convention, a convention not only celebrating the art and process of inking the skin, but also the history of tattoos, the tattoos themselves, associated literature, trade tools, commercial merchandise and tattoo artists.
The convention also stood as a celebration and exploration of tattoo culture; the culture that is associated and constantly redefined around tattoos and the individuals who express themselves and their whims or their beliefs through the patterns and images they permanently imprint on their skin.
I could run you through a history of the art of tattooing – but I think it would please me more than you. For the few of you that would like to know the specifics of the art – my dear friend Wiki has prepared this lovely page for you.
If Wiki was a man…. (my weakness is a… [ Read more ]
Gothic Playtime
Posted by Samantha Laura Kaye in Alternative, Beauty, Modeling, Test Shoots on October 5, 2010

A few weeks ago I found myself in Robert Miller‘s studio for an afternoon of “play.” Rob and I hoped to tackle the challenge of gothic/vampire pale – something which is extremely difficult for photographers and make-up artists to get right.
Despite the difficulty of the task, I feel that Rob and I nailed it and produced one of the better examples of gothic glam.
I used Kryolan water-based white face paint on my skin, applying it first in thick sweeping motions with MAC’s #187 brush, and then smoothing it over smaller areas with the #249 brush and buffing it into delicate skin such as around the eyes with the #227 brush. The amazing shiny lip was produced by using Hourglass “Extreme Sheen” in “Siren.” Hourglass is an amazing brand that I discovered whilst in Los Angeles last December – seek out the hourglass mascara for great definition… [ Read more ]
Lumo Suicide in Cape Town
Posted by Samantha Laura Kaye in Alternative on May 3, 2010
Cape Town’s “Southern Ink Xposure” tattoo convention brought an assortment of alternative inked models to the mother city, and we all know that there’s nothing quite so inspiring to photographers as a uniquely beautiful girl. Southern Ink Xposure was painfully timed to compete with the birthday weekend of yours truly, so alas there was not much model grabbing and photo taking on my behalf, but luckily one or two of the beauties stayed behind, and I was given the opportunity to work with a suicide girl and official suicide girl photographer. Lumo Suicide (the name of this particular Suicide Girl) asked me to curl her hair and make her look a mix of classically beautiful and interesting. The pink heart is obviously not present on the purchased set.

Pro Tip: When dealing with something fiddly such as petals or feathers or individual lashes use tweezers to position the object in place, check the direction of the curve of the hair/petal and hold in place until secure. Using as little glue as possible cover the tip of the lash or petal and wait for the glue to become tacky before adhering it to the skin.
