Deep Blue – Rick Nunn – Project 50
Posted by Samantha Laura Kaye in 2011 Events, Gallery Exhibitions, Lady Kaye, London, Modeling, Test Shoots, Tips and Tricks on October 11, 2011
Remember that awesome photographer doing that awesome Project 50 thing I told you about yesterday? Well not only did he shoot me for day 11, but he also shot me for day 12.
Rick ordered an “o flash” online and decided I was a good test subject for his first shoot with it.
An “O flash” or “ring flash” is a ring of light that fits around the lens of the camera. Here is a picture to illustrate.
As you can see, the o-flash can be attached to the camera which makes it a popular choice for photographers at festivals or on the move as they do not have to carry bulky softboxes (those big square boxes on stands covered in sand bags and often with wires connecting to a generator or plug point) or beauty dishes (those big satellite looking lights.)
The advantage of a… [ Read more ]
Rick Nunn – Project 50 – Milk & Honey

50 photographs – over 50 consecutive days – all shot with a 50mm lens = Project 50. 100% awesome.
Rick is one of my favourite photographers, though he regards himself as a designer with a passion for photography rather than a professional photographer. If you take a look at his Flickr and his website you might take my side and view him as the camera wielding guru I do.
2011 sees Rick working on his third project 50, and I was lucky enough to be invited to take part as the subject matter for day 11.
You can view this photograph really really big here. There is also a wicked video which he does for each photograph where he goes through the lighting setup he uses and as a result of being in day 11 you can see me briefly making an appearance in said[ Read more ]
Street. An Exhibition
Posted by Samantha Laura Kaye in Gallery Exhibitions on May 18, 2011

“What is a city without its streets? They give rise to neighbourhoods, to life, to memories, to cultural identities and sometimes movements. And yet, while city streets are in a real sense the canvas on which urbanites live out their lives, very seldom are they the subject – the object of art.”
Street. An Exhibition celebrates the essence and culture of the streets of Cape Town through a variety of local artists and individuals celebrating the streets in which they live.
One of these artists is Anthony Lee Martin, who hoped to capture the essence of Harrington Street – home of many popular nightclubs, students and urban hipsters indulging in after-hours-merriments.
Anthony set out to the ever popular nightclub Assembly and handed patrons a chalkboard stencilled permanently with “I have a dream that one day” (….) giving them chalk and the opportunity to express their dream as seriously or… [ Read more ]
Lightly Salted

One of my nearest and dearest (miss MJ Reefer) has brought together a group of fabulously talented up and coming young graphic artists (all ladies) for an exhibition this month. The exhibition takes place at Mumbo Jumbo which is in Greenmarket Square (38 Shortmarket Street) and starts at 7pm on October 15th (friday.)
If you are lucky enough to be able to attend this event (ie you live in Cape Town and don’t have a parent’s birthday dinner- though you could bring the parental unit too…) you’ll be treated to a visual feast of illustrations, graphic art and urban street art.
There will refreshments for the early birds followed by live music and a live DJ set to kickoff the party afterwards.
To wet your appetite here is some of MJ’s work:
Here are some amuse bouches from the other artists:
I believe that all Christmas shopping… [ Read more ]
Tretchikoff & Me
Posted by Samantha Laura Kaye in Editorial, Gallery Exhibitions on June 28, 2010
For those of you who weren’t at the opening and have not yet seen it, get yourself over to Salon 91 on Kloof Street and check out the Tretchikoff & Me exhibition of vintage Tretchikoff prints, juxtaposed against the contemporary responses (ceramic, printmaking and photographic) of local South African artists. Niklas Zimmer is the featured photographer, and I painted the beautiful ladies he featured in his photographs using a combination of MAC and Chanel concealers and oil-based Kryolan face-paints. I achieved the “water droplets” with tubes of Mac’s clear lipglass. Far more impressive in real life – I suggest you take a wander down Kloof Street and have a look for yourself.
Our Team consisted of:
Photographer: Niklas Zimmer
Lighting Design: Yotam Sandak
Stylist: Bella Knemeyer
Hair and Make-up Artist: Samantha Laura Kaye
Assistant : Penny Youngleson.
Models wish to remain anonymous.

“A Moment in Time” is the brainchild of Boss Models and Artist Management along with Bell-Roberts Gallery. It is an exhibition of photographic works by some of South Africa’s most talented fashion photographers, stylists and hair and make-up artists, all of which are 1/1 and signed by the artist. The exhibition opened on the 22nd of October, and patrons are invited to bid for the works online up until the 30th of October 2009. All proceeds go to “Missing Children SA Charity.”
I worked with Bevan Davis for some of the images in his part of the exhibition. Bevan asked for make-up that was simple and clean, but still sexy rather than nude. Bevan is not only a fantastic photographer, but also a master of post production, all of which he does himself. For me, Bevan’s series is timeless, and I gaze upon the images the way I do… [ Read more ]
