Little Red

As many of you know I was fortunate enough to work with Rick Nunn for a couple of days in 2011. After shooting “White in the Woods” we got onto something creative and attempted “Little Red.” Rick burgled his parent’s house for the basket, rented the cape from a local fancy dress shop, and I put together the rest with a little help from my theatrical wardrobe.

Rick shot the first three digitally – and the rest on expired film which is what caused the unusual colour tones and grain on the later images.

The first image above is my favorite – which is yours?

So those were the digital… but Rick also shot this on FILM with his Canon 1V-hs with the Canon EF 135mm F/2.0 L on expired Fuji X-tra ISO400 (which is where these amazing tones come from).

A week and I’m on a jet plane

It’s FRIDAY which marks 1 week until I fly to Cape Town, and the start of my last weekend in the UK until I come back in 2012.

My schedule goes a little something like this:  Travel for the short film – Friday – Tuesday (28th-1st November) act in said short film with manically long hours to finish on schedule. 2nd November – travel back to Woking to collect Summer S.A. suitcase and put wintery clothes worn on set but off screen into storage. Travel into London that afternoon/evening. Have as much fun as possible evening of the 2nd and 3rd (Wednesday&Thursday) – stay tuned for a bumper “weekend in pictures” . Breakfast at either St Ali or The Botanist on the 4th November  - last piccolo at Kaffeine – then to Heathrow to not miss my flight.

I arrive in Cape Town November 5th – I know I said I… [ Read more ]

Yalla Yalla -Lebanese in London

There were two things compelling me to try out “Yalla Yalla” before I leave London. The first was a tweet I saw, ranking it amongst the Top 10 places in London to eat in terms of value for money. The second was the tagline – “Beirut Street Food” – having fallen deeply in love with Lebanon, its people and its parties over June/July this year – I feel drawn to Lebanese cuisine and culture more than ever.

Seating only 28 people, the restuarant is small and cozy, with hints of eastern flair but decor minimal enough to prevent claustrophobia.

There are a selection of mains, covering Lebanese traditional favourites such as Shish Taouk, Kafta Meshoue, Lahem Casserole and Schwarma’s. If you don’t know what these sorts of dishes entail you can check out the full menu with descriptions here.

Yalla Yalla also offers a selection of mezze dishes, mostly… [ Read more ]

Deep Blue – Rick Nunn – Project 50

Remember that awesome photographer doing that awesome Project 50 thing I told you about yesterday? Well not only did he shoot me for day 11, but he also shot me for day 12.

Rick ordered an “o flash” online and decided I was a good test subject for his first shoot with it.

An “O flash” or “ring flash” is a ring of light that fits around the lens of the camera. Here is a picture to illustrate.

As you can see, the o-flash can be attached to the camera which makes it a popular choice for photographers at festivals or on the move as they do not have to carry bulky softboxes (those big square boxes on stands covered in sand bags and often with wires connecting to a generator or plug point) or beauty dishes (those big satellite looking lights.)

The advantage of a… [ Read more ]

Mask Making in London – Halloween Prep

This Tuesday, if I was not driving out to Nottingham to watch Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler *insert smug grin* I would be attending the mask making workshop being hosted by Cabinet of Curious Creatures as part of  the Hendricks lecture series.

The Cabinet of Curious Creatures are a magical indulgence of imagination and creativity and have travelled the UKs festival scene delighting the masses for quite some time.

“This specific workshop will focus on creating individual Halloween based creatures encouraging you to delve into the darkest corners of your soul. You will be making 3D bespoke structures that you will then decorate using a wide variety of sumptuous materials to help facilitate the birth of your forthcoming creature.”

- Sounds pretty good to me – and at only 12 pounds it is very affordable.

Doors open at 6pm, the workshop commences at 7pm and it is all… [ Read more ]

FHM’s 89th Sexiest Woman in the World

FHM South Africa came out with their 100 sexiest women in the world list earlier this year…. and much to my shock and disbelief I was on it!!

Thank you to Rio for bringing me a copy of the magazine, all the way from South Africa so that I could scan in the above photograph as well as the whole page:

Yep – I beat Ke$ha, Selena Gomez, Britney (99 – she barely made it this year), Kim Kardashian, Eva Longaria and a coupe of people I’ve never heard of. I had never entered a beauty pageant before or any sort of competition like this – but thanks to a series of online votes from the interwebs at large I was honoured with an official sexy stamp which I find puzzling, amazing, delightful and with a history of childhood bullying and low self esteem, a tad bizarre.

Thanks… [ Read more ]

Peace amidst the London Riots

So as I’m sure you all know Londoners have been rioting and looting, police have been all over the streets, shops are closed and boarded up, troubled youths have been indulging in violent behaviour and those of us who live in the affected areas have had hours of police and ambulance sirens as the soundtrack to our daily lives.

Stressful? A little…

My friend Ference sent me a link to this instrumental performance and when I found myself feeling a little anxious on the fire escape to my building it really helped me calm down and unwind before bed.

Its beautiful, so I wanted to share it with you.

Yours, safe and with lots of love for you all,

Samcat
